Potter and inventor Josiah Wedgwood introduced several new types of earthenware, including, in 1775, jasperware, a fine-grained porcelain-like unglazed stoneware. Although he offered jasperware in several different colors, Wedgwood's blue jasperware decorated with white bas-reliefs of classical figures applied to the surface was the most popular and is still produced today.
"Josiah Wedgwood himself felt it was one of his greatest achievements."
