Ludwig Wessel bought the facilities of the Poppelsdorf pottery in 1828 -1829. Under Ludwig, his son, Franz, and his son-in law Karl von Thielman, the company was innovative--developing a porcelain-like earthenware, and being among the first to switch to coal-burning kilns.
