Saruk Carpet Saruk, northwestern Persia (Iran) Mid 19th century or later
This hunting rug was made for wall decoration and reflects European influence in the use of just one or two figures in the center. As Aziyeh Ziai notes,"Still, the figures represented on these rugs are usually the old heroes and kings of Persian history and mythology. In this case, the central design is from a bas relief on a palace at Persepolis. An ancient Assyrian king is fighting a winged lion griffin with a sword. The Arabic writing around the edges is an inscription or verse related to the scene."
