Featured artifact: Sumakh Rug
Sumakh Rug
Shahsavan tribe
Shivan district, about 70 miles west of Baku, Azerbaijan
Before 1925

Sumakh rugs are flat woven, not knotted, and differ from khilim rugs in having loose thread on the back which add warmth. Originally, these rugs were woven by young girls as part of their dowry. Each tries to do her best work to impress possible a potential groom's family. The animals in the border are dogs.
