Featured quilt: Log Cabin Variation Quilt
Accession number H11289

Description of Top
Red white and blue log cabin variation quilt (76" x 62 ½") with no batting. Quilt top is cotton. Fabrics are solid color. Structure consists of 20 blocks (14" square) in 4 x 5 set. Blocks alternate color order (some have red center, some white) though not consistently. Block orientation is straight and tangent. Two pieced borders (1 ½" inner border, 1 ¼" outer border).

Quilt Back
Muslin and printed fabrics. Back has 20 pieces plus borders. Back is constructed the way it is because of log cabin technique.

None

Finishing
Edges are straight, corners square. Self bound, front brought to back.

Condition
Moderate wear in binding area, dye fading, stains.

Miscellaneous
Block construction interesting. Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns identifies similar block as #3979 called "Boston Commons" or "Going Around the Mountain." SC states this quilt was made by her grandmother and is the oldest that she had.
