Featured quilt: Compass Quilt
Accession number H11294

Description of Top
Blue and brown chintz on white ground Mariner's Compass quilt (95 ½" x 99 ½") with double dogtooth border. Quilt top is cotton. Set is 4 x 4, 16 blocks (@ 9 ½" square). Block orientation is straight and tangent. Quilt has pieced border 8 ¾" wide. Border patternis double dogtooth, patterns facing each other.

Quilt Back
Muslin in 4 pieces.

Quilting
Hand-quilted, @ 11 stitches per inch. Quantity: medium in stars, heavy inbetween. Fineness of stitches: medium. Quilting: cross hatch in centers, diagonal on stars, feather in border, feather wreaths inbetween blocks.

Finishing
Edges are straight, corners are square. Self bound binding, backing brought to front.

Condition
Minimal damage, some spotting.

Miscellaneous
Random tucks on white (assumed to make measurements work). Chintz (rainbow serpentine?) is exceptional.
