Featured quilt: Mexican Rose Quilt
Accession number H11301

Description of Top
Red, green, and orange on cream ground appliqué quilt (100" x 86 ¼") with vine border. Quilt top is cotton. Fabrics are solids. Structure consists of 15 patterned and 15 plain, alternate blocks. Appliqué blocks are hand-stitched with invisible stitching. Very tiny stitches were used. Blocks measure @ 13 ½" x 14 ¼". Block orientation is straight. Set is 6 x 5. Quilt has one border, 8 ½" wide. Border carries appliqué vine and floral pattern. Vine loops into rounded corners.

Quilt Back
Muslin in 3 pieces.

Quilting
Hand quilted, @ 7 stitches per inch. Quantity is medium, fineness of stitches is medium. Echo quilting is used in border. Wreath, hanging diamond, diagonal, and chevron motifs are also used.

Finishing
Edges of quilt are straight, corners are rounded. Binding is applied. Binding is a printed floral.

Condition
Minimal damage: dye fading, stains.

Miscellaneous
Pencil lines still very visible. Quilt seems never to have been laundered. SC notes that quilt's original owner called quilt "Prairie Rose." Owner lived near Newmarket, Maryland. SC notes that "these are the typical colors of the Pennsylvania Dutch quilts—beautiful work ruined by harsh colors."
