| Accession number H11302 Description of Top Red, pink, green, and yellow appliqué on white ground quilt (87 ½" x 88 ½") with floral border. Pattern identified as Whig Rose. Quilt top is cotton. Fabric patterns are printed including dot and floral. Solids are also evident. Structure consists of nin appliqué blocks (@ 23 ½" x 24 3/8" each) in a 3 x 3 set. Block orientation is straight. Basic and reverse appliqué techniques are present. Invisible hand stitches are used to secure design. Quilt has one 8" wide border that carries a vine and floral appliqué design. Quilt Back Muslin in two pieces. Quilting Hand-quilted with very fine stitches (@13-14 stitches per inch), heavy in quantity. Filler and outline quilting techniques evident. Patterns include feathers, leaves, and fleur de lis. Finishing Edges are straight, corners are square. Red binding is applied and is cut on grain. Condition Minimal damage: some stains and small tears/holes. Miscellaneous SC states that this quilt can "safely be placed between 1835 and 1845—unless the maker changed both her politics and her best quilt's name, after she had completed it."
